Gold price has connection to jobs
Interview with Scott Marikis, general manager, Echo Bay Mines Ltd.'s Kettle River operations

Marikis

What is the biggest issue facing the gold industry this year?

"One of the big opportunities is the gold price. With the weakening dollar and the situation going on overseas, the fundamental supply-and-demand situation appears to be improving."

What kinds of practical impacts would an increase in gold price have?

"I see it as being a positive for the work force, especially in the West. I think you'd see a lot more exploration. That's more jobs for geologists, permitting and support people, and, hopefully, eventually more jobs for miners."

How long has Echo Bay been in Kettle River?

"It started in February of 1990 with Echo Bay Mines. Three companies -- Echo Bay, Kinross Gold and TVX Gold -- are merging to form a new company, Kinross Gold. It's a Canadian company."
